Understanding Solar Panel Warranties: Your ₹3,00,000+ Insurance Policy

When you invest ₹3,00,000 to ₹5,00,000 in a rooftop solar system, the solar panel warranty is your primary financial protection over the next 25 years. Yet most homeowners sign the purchase agreement without reading the warranty terms, do not know the difference between product and performance warranties, and have no idea how to file a claim if something goes wrong. This guide by Er. Dhramveer Joshi demystifies solar panel warranties in the Indian context and equips you with the knowledge to protect your investment.

The Two Types of Solar Panel Warranties

Every solar panel from a legitimate manufacturer comes with two separate warranties, each covering different failure modes with different terms and durations.

Product Warranty (Workmanship/Material Warranty)

The product warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship that cause the panel to malfunction or fail. This includes:

  • Delamination: Separation of the encapsulant (EVA or POE) from the glass or backsheet, allowing moisture ingress that causes corrosion of cell interconnects and busbars.
  • Junction Box Failure: Cracking, water ingress, or diode failure in the junction box that causes open-circuit or ground-fault conditions.
  • Backsheet Cracking: Degradation of the rear polymer layer that exposes the cells to moisture and environmental damage.
  • Frame Corrosion: Premature corrosion of the anodised aluminium frame due to defective anodising or incompatible mounting materials (galvanic corrosion from dissimilar metals).
  • Cell Hot Spots: Manufacturing defects such as poor soldering, cracked cells from handling, or improperly connected bypass diodes that cause localised overheating.
  • Glass Breakage: Spontaneous fracture due to inclusions (nickel sulphide stones) in the tempered glass, not caused by external impact.

Duration: Tier-1 manufacturers typically offer 12 to 15 years of product warranty. Some premium brands like REC and SunPower offer up to 25 years. During this period, the manufacturer will replace the defective panel with a new unit of equivalent or higher wattage at no cost to the homeowner, including shipping.

Performance Warranty (Linear Degradation Warranty)

The performance warranty guarantees that the panel will produce a minimum percentage of its rated power output over its lifetime. Modern N-Type TOPCon panels from tier-1 manufacturers offer the following typical performance warranty curve:

YearMinimum Guaranteed Output (%)Example: 540 W Panel (Min. Watts)
Year 197.50%526.5 W
Year 297.00%523.8 W
Year 595.50%515.7 W
Year 1093.00%502.2 W
Year 1590.50%488.7 W
Year 2088.00%475.2 W
Year 2584.80%457.9 W

If your panel tests below the warranted output for its age, you have a valid performance warranty claim. The manufacturer will typically provide a replacement panel, a supplementary panel to make up the shortfall, or a financial compensation calculated as the value of the lost output over the remaining warranty period.

DCR Panels and Warranty Implications

Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, only DCR (Domestic Content Requirement) solar panels are eligible for the central government subsidy. DCR panels must use solar cells manufactured in India. This has important warranty implications:

Warranty Enforceability: DCR panels from manufacturers with Indian production facilities (Adani, Waaree, Tata Solar, Vikram Solar, Premier Energies) offer stronger warranty enforceability because the company has a physical presence, manufacturing facility, and legal entity in India. If a warranty issue arises, you can approach the manufacturer directly through their India office.

Non-DCR Panel Risk: Some installers offer non-DCR panels (typically Chinese imports) at lower prices but without subsidy eligibility. These panels may have excellent technical specifications, but enforcing a warranty claim against a manufacturer with no Indian legal entity can be extremely difficult. Even if the manufacturer has an Indian distributor, the distributor may not honour warranty obligations if the manufacturer does not support the claim.

What Can Void Your Solar Panel Warranty

Understanding warranty exclusions is just as important as understanding what is covered. Here are the most common warranty-voiding conditions, many of which are preventable:

1. Installation by Non-Authorised Personnel: Most manufacturers require installation by certified or authorised installers. If your system is installed by an unqualified electrician or a non-empanelled installer, the manufacturer may reject your warranty claim. Always ask your installer to provide their authorisation certificate from the panel manufacturer.

2. Physical Damage from Handling: Dropping a panel during installation, stepping on it, or stacking panels without edge protectors can create micro-cracks in the cells that are invisible to the naked eye but worsen over time. These are classified as handling damage and are excluded from warranty coverage. A reputable installer uses suction-cup lifters and never allows panels to be walked on.

3. Exceeding Maximum System Voltage: Solar panels have a maximum system voltage rating (typically 1,000 V or 1,500 V) that limits the number of panels that can be connected in series in a string. Exceeding this voltage can damage the insulation and cause electrical breakdown, voiding the warranty. Your installer must calculate the maximum open-circuit voltage of the string at the lowest expected temperature (when voltage is highest) and ensure it stays below the panel's maximum system voltage.

4. Inadequate Earthing: The panel frame must be connected to the protective earth system through a continuous copper earth conductor. Failure to earth the array can lead to potential-induced degradation (PID), a well-documented phenomenon where leakage current through the glass and encapsulant permanently damages the cell surface, reducing output by 10 to 50 percent. PID damage caused by inadequate earthing is excluded from most performance warranties.

5. Environmental Damage Beyond Design Limits: Panels are tested to withstand specific environmental loads — typically IEC 61215 standards including 140 km/h wind load, 25 mm hail at 23 m/s impact, and 5,400 Pa snow/mechanical load. Damage from cyclones, hurricanes, or falling trees that exceed these design limits is classified as force majeure and is not covered by the warranty. However, damage from normal hailstorms within the IEC test parameters should be covered.

6. Chemical Exposure: Exposure to solvents, acids, alkalis, or aggressive cleaning chemicals can damage the backsheet, encapsulant, and anti-reflective coating. Clean panels only with plain water and a soft cloth. Never use industrial solvents, ammonia-based glass cleaners, or abrasive cleaning compounds.

How to File a Warranty Claim: Step-by-Step Process

If you suspect a warranty issue, follow this systematic process to maximise your chances of a successful claim:

Step 1 — Document the Issue: Take clear, high-resolution photographs of the defect from multiple angles. If the issue is performance-related, export your monitoring system data showing the daily generation trend over the past 12 months. Note the panel serial number (found on the rear label and sometimes printed on the junction box).

Step 2 — Contact Your Installer: Your first point of contact should always be the installer who sold and installed the system. Under Indian consumer protection law, the seller bears the primary responsibility for warranty service. Provide them with the documentation from Step 1 and request a formal warranty inspection.

Step 3 — Escalate to the Manufacturer: If the installer is unresponsive, no longer in business, or disputes the claim, contact the panel manufacturer directly. Most tier-1 manufacturers have an India customer service email and phone number listed on their website. Submit a formal warranty claim with all documentation, including the purchase invoice, installation photos, commissioning certificate, and evidence of the defect.

Step 4 — Independent Testing (If Needed): If the manufacturer disputes a performance warranty claim, you can commission an independent I-V curve test by a NABL-accredited testing laboratory or a certified solar engineer with a portable I-V tracer. The test report, which measures the panel's actual power output under Standard Test Conditions, serves as objective evidence for the claim. Leading testing labs in India include TÜV Rheinland, UL Solutions, and the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE).

Step 5 — Consumer Forum (Last Resort): If the manufacturer rejects a valid warranty claim, you can file a complaint with the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. Include all documentation, the I-V test report, and the warranty certificate. The consumer forum can order the manufacturer to replace the panel, provide compensation, or both.

How to Protect Your Warranty from Day One

Prevention is far more effective than filing claims. Here are actionable steps to ensure your warranty remains valid throughout the panel's life:

  • Choose an Authorised Installer: Verify that your installer is listed on the panel manufacturer's authorised partner or channel partner page. Request their installation certification.
  • Retain All Documents: Keep the original purchase invoice, panel datasheets with serial numbers, installation photos (showing serial numbers, wiring, earthing), commissioning report, and the signed warranty card in a safe, accessible location. A digital backup in cloud storage is highly recommended.
  • Ensure Proper Earthing: Insist on a documented earth resistance test (fall-of-potential method) at commissioning, with the measured value recorded in the commissioning report. The value should be below 5 ohms.
  • Install Surge Protection: Type 2 SPDs on both DC and AC sides protect your panels and inverter from lightning-induced surges, which are a common cause of warranty-excluded damage.
  • Maintain a Generation Log: Monthly generation records create a documented performance baseline. If a panel degrades faster than the warranty curve, your historical data provides compelling evidence for a claim.
  • Annual Professional Inspection: An AMC with thermal imaging and I-V testing detects early-stage defects (hot spots, micro-cracks, PID) before they progress beyond warranty coverage.

Expert Advisory by Er. Dhramveer Joshi

In my fifteen years of solar engineering practice, I have managed over fifty warranty claims on behalf of homeowners. The most common reason for claim rejection is not a legitimate warranty exclusion but rather the homeowner's inability to produce the required documentation — lost invoices, missing serial numbers, no commissioning report, and no generation data. The second most common reason is installation by a non-authorised technician who cut corners on earthing and cable management. Both of these are entirely preventable. Invest thirty minutes at the time of installation to photograph every serial number, file every document, and verify your earthing — this half-hour of diligence protects a ₹3,00,000 to ₹5,00,000 investment for twenty-five years.
